During the Great Depression, economic hardships were widespread, and bartering became a common way for people to obtain the goods they needed without using scarce cash. According to local lore,  two boys often came to a local store to trade two eggs for sugar and other goods. This barter system was so characteristic of their visits that the area began to be referred to jokingly as "Two Egg" by locals. The name stuck and eventually became officially adopted.
